Ceremony Included Tableau Of Leonardo Da Vincis The Last Supper

Paris Olympics Organizers Apologize for Offensive Display

Ceremony Included Tableau of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper"

Scene Deemed Inappropriate by Some Viewers

Paris, France - Sunday, July 26, 2021 - Paris Olympic organizers have apologized after receiving complaints about a tableau of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" that appeared during the opening ceremony.

The tableau, which featured actors posing as Jesus Christ and his apostles, was intended to symbolize the religious significance of the upcoming Games. However, some viewers found the scene offensive, considering it a disrespectful portrayal of a sacred event.

"We understand that the tableau may have offended some people, and we sincerely apologize for any distress it caused," said Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee. "Our intention was to celebrate the role of religion in the history of the Olympic Games, but we recognize that our execution was not sensitive enough."

The apology comes as the Olympic Games face increasing scrutiny over issues of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. In recent years, several major sporting events have been marred by complaints about the use of offensive or inappropriate imagery.
